Diesel is 45% more expensive than in early July
Economist Iurie Rija says the diesel price rise adds about 880 lei to the cost of each hectare farmers work.
Written later, from the reports of that day.
What it means for you
For a hectare that uses about 80 litres of diesel, a farmer now pays about 880 lei more than in early summer. At a harvest of 3 tonnes per hectare, the extra cost reaches almost 300 lei per tonne. If grain prices do not rise, the difference comes out of farmers' own income.
What happened
The maximum diesel price fell to 35.42 lei per litre on 6 October, 1.42 lei less than at the end of September. Compared with early July, when a litre cost 24.41 lei, diesel is about 45% more expensive. Economist Iurie Rija links the rise to Russian and Chinese export restrictions and disruptions in the Persian Gulf.
In short
- On 6 October, the maximum diesel price was 35.42 lei per litre.
- In early July, a litre of diesel cost 24.41 lei.
- At a harvest of 5 tonnes per hectare, the rise adds about 176 lei to each tonne.
- The economist estimates that the restrictions and disruptions remove 1 to 1.3 million barrels of diesel per day from the market.
